Every month, Detroit SOUP welcomes community members to a dinner of salad, bread, and soup, for a donation of $5. Diners listen to proposals from other community members about a project idea- often involving art, urban agriculture, social entrepreneurship- and vote for their favorite proposal. The project with the most votes wins the admission money collected. Over 5 years, Detroit SOUP has provided over $85,000 in community-raised project funding.
This is a great concept, originating in Chicago and taking hold in Detroit. It works well in a city where $1000 can make a huge impact. I think artists anywhere can use the idea to great effect– through our magical, money-expanding powers. Happy 5th Anniversary, and congratulations on over $85,000 in project funding, Detroit SOUP!
