Percentage of stay-at-home moms rising, child care costs likely cause

The percentage of stay-at-home moms grew to 29% in 2012, according to a recent Pew Research Center report.  Based on census data, the report indicates that the rising cost of child care is a likely reason that growing numbers of women are opting out of the workforce.

According to census information, on average, child care costs represent 7.2% of family income.  The Pew report shows, however, that “child care costs hit families at different income levels very differently,” and documents low income families paying as much as 39.6% of their income on child care costs.
